{"id":46,"date":"2008-07-14T02:29:20","date_gmt":"2008-07-14T08:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.satisfice.com\/kaner\/?p=42"},"modified":"2008-07-14T02:29:20","modified_gmt":"2008-07-14T08:29:20","slug":"defining-exploratory-testing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kaner.com\/?p=46","title":{"rendered":"Defining Exploratory Testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In January, 2006, several of us worked on definitions of exploratory testing at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.developsense.com\/2006\/02\/exploratory-testing-building-skill.html\">Exploratory Testing Research Summit<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.testingreflections.com\/node\/view\/3190\">another link<\/a>), with follow-up work at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.developsense.com\/2008\/09\/evolving-understanding-about.html\">Workshop on Heuristic and Exploratory Techniques<\/a> in May.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t reach unanimous agreement at that meeting. However, later discussions based on the meeting&#8217;s notes yielded this definition:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Exploratory software testing is a style of software testing that emphasizes the personal freedom and responsibility of the individual tester to continually optimize the value of her work by treating test-related learning, test design, test execution, and test result interpretation as mutually supportive activities that run in parallel throughout the project.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I cannot present this as a consensus definition from WHET, both because (a) not everyone who came to WHET would agree and (b) several other people helped polish it. But I am uncomfortable presenting it as if it is primarily from James Bach, Jon Bach, Mike Bolton, and\/or me.
